Searching for a #counsellor or #therapist can be difficult when you might not know what to look for. Here are some (hopefully) useful ways to distinguish and refine your search. Your #mentalhealth will thank you!
There can be a lot of confusion around what/who therapists and counsellors are and do.
Mental Health Care Professionals aim to help individuals, couples and families; and each have their own scope of practice that they work within to achieve mental health goals.
Knowing what your intentions and desired outcomes are for seeking treatment will help you
make a decision in what professional you see.
Some questions to consider when seeking support:
What particular set of skills does this provider have?
How might those skills support my specific mental health goals?
Does this provider have experience working with a broad or very specific population?
Will my sessions be covered or will I have to pay out of pocket?
Here are some different types of therapists/counsellors you may come across in your search:
Psychiatrist (MD)
Social Worker (BSW, MSW, RSW)
Psychologist (C.Psych/C.Psych. Assoc/PhD)
Registered Psychotherapist (RP)
Counsellors
